I AM IN BED WITH . . .

Procrastination.

Often

…Probably more than I would like to admit to anyone.
It's like a dirty secret I have because I believe I am:
(a) not thought of as a procrastinator
   &
(b) damn good at hiding my procrastination due to the fact that when push comes to shove I always get things done.

So, basically this means I am a highly successful procrastinator.

However, it plagues me. It ruins my free time. It makes it hard for me to sleep sometimes. It kind of makes me feel like a mini-failure at times, (i.e. "Really -- I can't beat this character flaw?"). Procrastination comes in the form of things so small as listening to my voicemail (I think that it just takes too long), or putting the dishes actually IN the dishwasher (hello lazy); to larger projects like the beautiful crystal pendant light fixture that has been sitting on the floor in various rooms of my apartment now for a good six months. Maybe seven. I have justifications for all of these hold-ups. I have really good ones too. I have sometimes almost convinced myself that my reasons are valid.

[Side note to my husband if he is reading this: I seem to be able to even beat myself at a debate. Hmmmm...]

Does anyone else experience procrastination as an everyday or frequent occurrence? How do you move past it & not justify the hold-ups? How do you beat procrastination into a little bloody pulp? Seriously . . .  how can I beat this?

  1. I've had the job as a procrastinator for the past 38 yrs. I've recently learned a great way to elliminate this awful thing is by making short term goal lists. I procrastinate on doing that as well. lol. Baby steps for me. But yes, the lists work. Something as small as writing down, "today I will put my pendant away in it's rightful place(wherever that may be for you). I have noticed it works. Just make sure you write the note. lol. I was supposed to write a list this morning... I am going to heed my own advice. See you in class! :)

  2. Making lists seems to be so German and that's why I may be avoiding those ;-) ... but apparently they work so why not jumping over my own's shadow and try it out!
@Bethany: I know exactly what your are talking about ... There are these little (or major) things I never get done ... why is it so difficult?? Because once I manage to tackle one of these annoying things that sometimes make me feel so heavy (unless I am blocking it out which mostly works perfectly) I realize that it's really not that hard to get it done. And by the way I totally agree: You do not appear as a procrastinator to me but you are in good company :-)
