Music heals and speaks to emotions we simply cannot articulate at times. It can change the mood, instantly. It speaks to the soul directly. I believe we separate ourselves most from the animal kingdom by the simple fact that
WE HAVE MUSIC.
WE HAVE MUSIC.
How can I describe the absolute rush I get from Allegro, from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K .525?
I cannot.
But if you listen to the Camilli String Quartet's version you will know exactly what I mean.
I listen to music everyday, for hours. Really. And I listen to everything from country to jazz to dub step remixes to 80s cover bands to classical ballets. However, I rarely play music during the "meat & potatoes" part of practice when I teach yoga. The reason is this: in my experience, it can bring false or heightened energy to a room - or can serve as a crutch to a teacher (namely me). The practice should be compelling enough. The words I am saying are there to be heard. The silence or the sound of your breath should be felt. It is ok to be uncomfortable. Be with what is.
However, once we're on our way home, so to speak - once we hit backbends or sometimes hips, it can be a great tool for students to let go, to dig deeper - and I do use music, as an anti-distraction. Sometimes it works, sometimes not - but everytime I play something that I truly love and I feel is right for the moment, inevitably a student asks me "what was that song you played during...?"
"Music, makes the people, come together." -Madonna
And so - requested from a student in today's yoga class - core work...into hip openers...into savasana, here are a few beautiful tunes to listen to as you just breathe.
The last one listed I actually sang to my Uncle George, when I got my moment alone with him to say goodbye at the hospital. How could I tell him what a profound affect he had on me, and everyone he came in contact with? How could I tell him how much I loved and adored him? I couldn't find the words - so I sang a song that I thought said it all. I don't think I have ever shared that bit of information, but at this moment it feels, just right.
Later that afternoon, I stood with all my family, in a circle around him holding hands, as he left this world. But the sound of his voice, the structure of his character and the melody of his sense of humor still plays on with me daily.
So, right now - let the music play. Enjoy.
